An Easy Guide to Getting Free COVID Tests Sent to Your Home

Looking for ways to save money on COVID tests? You can get them free from the COVID.gov program! It’s easy! We’ve got the details right here!

An Easy Guide to Getting Free COVID Tests Sent to Your Home

Keeping healthy during the pandemic is crucial—and one way you can do that is through COVID testing when you think you may be experiencing symptoms or you may have been exposed. If you’re like many, you probably already know about at-home COVID tests you can buy (and you’ve probably purchased a few). But we’re all about saving money here, so that’s why we’re going to show you how to get some free COVID tests!

Free COVID tests from COVID.gov

Earlier this year, the federal government set up a program that allows everyone to order four free COVID tests—twice! Here’s how it works:

  • Surf over to COVID.gov.
  • Call the number there or use the online order portal to have free tests sent to your home.
  • They’ll be delivered in the mail as soon as your order has been filled.
  • If this is your first time ordering tests, you’ll be able to order four more at a later time.
  • If you’ve already ordered a set of four tests from COVID.gov, then you can place one more order for another set of four tests.

Easy peasy, right? Right! But you’ve probably got a few questions about how these tests work, so we’ll cover that below.

Frequently asked questions about COVID.gov tests

Do you need insurance to get these tests?

That’s been a big question everyone has had throughout the pandemic. Will COVID tests be covered by insurance? For these, there’s no need to worry about insurance to get the tests. They’re completely free—just fill out the order form with your name and shipping information. That’s it!

What kind of COVID tests are these?

That’s been another big question—which COVID tests are rapid, and which aren’t. These are rapid antigen tests that you can do at home. They’ll give you a result in about 30 minutes, and there’s no need to take them to a lab. According to the COVID.gov site, they’ll work whether you have symptoms or not and whether or not you’re up to date on vaccinations.

What should you do if you test positive?

If you do get a positive test result, follow the latest CDC guidelines for isolating. If you have a weakened immune system or other health complications, be sure to speak with a doctor right away to see if you may need treatment options other than rest and self-care.

What should you do if you can’t wait for your tests to arrive?

It will take about one to two weeks for your tests to arrive at your doorstep. In the meantime, if you need tests sooner than that, you can visit one of the testing sites listed here or you can purchase an over-the-counter home test. If you have private health insurance, be sure to let them know because you can get reimbursed for these!
