6 Cheap Stress Relief Ideas

Self care is huge right now — probably because for one reason or another, most of us are at least a little stressed out. That’s why we’ve got Self Care Sundays plus a plethora of products out there devoted to increasing our wellbeing.

So how do you do self care on the cheap? It’s easy! We’ve got lots of ideas to help.

1. Go for a walk

Something as simple as a walk won’t cost you anything — and it’s great for stress relief. It gets your blood pumping, which makes it a great activity for fitness, and it gets you out into the world to see whatever is interesting out there. Take the dog and go for a walk in the park for health and wellness benefits and a chance to reconnect with nature.

2. Try a free meditation app or video

There are lots of free meditation apps out there — like Headspace or Aura — that can help with stress relief. Try one to help yourself relax or to beat anxiety, or if apps aren’t your thing, look around on YouTube. You’ll find plenty of videos to guide your meditation, or soothing background tracks for a self-guided meditation experience.

3. Make working out a habit

Working out is one of the best stress relief activities there is because it boosts your fitness and overall sense of wellbeing. The key is to choose a workout that works for you. Maybe something like your very own couch to 10K challenge, or one of these budget-friendly fitness ideas. Whatever you do, choose something fun to increase the chances that you’ll stick with it.

4. Take up yoga for stress relief

Yoga is another great way to relieve stress. That’s because it combines fitness with meditation in a way that can really help you unwind. It teaches you to focus on your body and your breathing as you move through poses that test strength, balance, and flexibility. If you want to give it a shot, you can start for free. Just search online for beginner videos that look fun to try.

5. Keep a journal

Keeping a journal is a great way to relieve stress because it gives you an outlet to write out and release all those pent-up emotions and frustrations. There are lots of ways to go about it, too. Use a Google Doc, a journaling app, or do it the traditional way with a pen and a notebook. Feel free to spice up paper journals with stickers, drawings, or colorful pen shades to bring out your creative side, too.

6. Sleep more

Between work and chores and family and all the other things on your plate, it can be tough to work in a solid eight hours every night. But if you can, you should. Sleep deprivation leads to all kinds of health problems — obesity, heart problems, and more — plus it leaves you tired and feeling awful. Those are all good reasons to put your foot down, shut off those pesky notifications from work that come in at all hours, and get those needed Zs.
